1. Appli­ca­tion

Indi­vid­u­als and teams whose mature idea is in the (pre-)start-up phase or whose com­pa­ny was found­ed no more than five years ago can apply for Ener­gy Camp Africa. If you only have a vague busi­ness idea, you should still work on it and apply later.

Your start­up must oper­ate in one of these areas of decen­tral­ized renew­able ener­gy supply:

  • Ener­gy production
  • Smart Liv­ing, for exam­ple ener­gy for health, edu­ca­tion, water, san­i­ta­tion, con­sump­tion, mobil­i­ty, agriculture
  • Ener­gy-effi­cient prod­ucts and services
  • Financ­ing solutions
  • Resilience Engi­neer­ing
  • Stor­age systems
  • Ener­gy distribution
  • Mea­sur­ing and con­trol systems

Your start­up must be reg­is­tered in Sub-Saha­ran Africa or be in the pre-incor­po­ra­tion phase.

You must have already com­plet­ed a pilot project or won first pilot customers.

If you have already received more than 500k Euros from non-African investors, you will not be able to apply for the Ener­gy Camp.

Startup|Energy sup­ports the devel­op­ment of your new com­pa­ny in many ways:

  • You will receive inten­sive coach­ing from expe­ri­enced entre­pre­neurs and experts. The ses­sions focus on the top­ics that need to be fur­ther devel­oped or sharp­ened for the suc­cess of your com­pa­ny. This may con­cern your prod­uct itself, for exam­ple, or sales and mar­ket­ing or the finan­cial plan for suc­cess­ful investor search.
  • At the work­shop in Kam­pala or Nairo­bi you will have the oppor­tu­ni­ty to present your busi­ness idea in front of oth­er star­tups and coach­es and have it crit­i­cal­ly scru­ti­nized. But you can also dis­cuss a sin­gle top­ic that burns under your nails, if that helps you more.
    Dur­ing the work­shop, you are not only one of the pre­sen­ters, but also has to work cre­ative­ly with the busi­ness ideas of oth­er startups.
  • At the final Startup|Energy Award you have the oppor­tu­ni­ty to present your idea to a jury of experts and stake­hold­ers. The win­ner will receive a prize of 5,000 euros for the fur­ther devel­op­ment of his product.
  • We will also con­nect you with part­ners from the Startup|Energy com­mu­ni­ty: investors, part­ner com­pa­nies, accelerators.

A par­tic­i­pa­tion is there­fore worth­while per­ma­nent­ly for you and your busi­ness idea!

A max­i­mum of two peo­ple from each select­ed start­up can attend the work­shop in Kam­pala or Nairobi.

Unfor­tu­nate­ly, no. The Ener­gy Camps in Freiburg and East Africa each focus on start-up ideas for the local market.

Yes, but the start-up must not be more than five years ago.

A max­i­mum of five star­tups will be select­ed to par­tic­i­pate in Ener­gy Camp Africa.

2. Coach­ing phase

The coach­ing ses­sions focus on the top­ics that need to be fur­ther devel­oped or sharp­ened for the suc­cess of your com­pa­ny. This may con­cern your prod­uct itself, for exam­ple, or sales and mar­ket­ing or the finan­cial plan for suc­cess­ful investor search.

At the end of the coach­ing you should have devel­oped a detailed pre­sen­ta­tion of your busi­ness idea. You will then present these at the final work­shop in Kam­pala or Nairo­bi in front of the oth­er star­tups as well as sub­ject mat­ter experts.

The coach­es are expe­ri­enced entre­pre­neurs. Some of them come from the ener­gy sec­tor, part­ly from oth­er sec­tors. We believe that it is often pre­cise­ly the ques­tions and sug­ges­tions of non-indus­try experts that can take you for­ward.

You can arrange this indi­vid­u­al­ly with the coach. Most of the time they will prob­a­bly take place online (Skype, Zoom, Microsoft Teams, etc.).

Yes. The coach­ing ses­sions are an impor­tant part of the Ener­gy Camp. They help you per­fect your busi­ness idea.

No. How­ev­er, depend­ing on the top­ic, the team mem­bers should par­tic­i­pate, in whose com­pe­tence the sub­ject area is covered.

The coach­ing ses­sions are con­duct­ed in English.

If your start­up is select­ed to par­tic­i­pate in Ener­gy Camp Africa, there is no cost for the coach­ing ses­sions. Startup|Energy will also cov­er the costs of trav­el, accom­mo­da­tion and meals for the final work­shop in Kam­pala or Nairobi.

3rd Work­shop and Competition

The final work­shop will take place either in Kam­pala (Ugan­da) or Nairo­bi (Kenya). The final deci­sion on the loca­tion will be made depend­ing on the short-term Coro­na sit­u­a­tion and asso­ci­at­ed trav­el restrictions. 

You will present your devel­oped and sophis­ti­cat­ed pre­sen­ta­tion in coach­ing to oth­er star­tups and the oth­er coach­es and dis­cuss it with them. But you can also dis­cuss a sin­gle top­ic that burns under your nails, if that helps you more. Dur­ing the work­shop, you are not only one of the pre­sen­ters, but also has to work cre­ative­ly with the busi­ness ideas of oth­er startups.

The win­ner of the Startup|Energy Award receives prize mon­ey of 5,000 euros for the fur­ther devel­op­ment of his product.
